Exhibition opens: Wednesday 1 December 2010, 6-8pm
Exhibition continues: to 19 December 2010
Artist talks: Sunday 19 December 2010 at 4pm

Gallery 1 and 2 – me you me
Luke Tipene and Emmanuela Prigioni

“The world is a twofold (wo)man in accordance with a twofold attitude. (…) This world is somewhat reliable; it has density and duration; its articulation can be surveyed; (…) Without it you cannot remain alive; its reliability preserves you; but if you were to die into it, then you would be buried in nothingness.”

me you me is an installation and video artwork that investigates the interaction between couples. A collaboration between artists Luke Tipene and Emmanuela Prigioni, me you me is developed from analysing footage of couples in the public domain. The work rationalises the complexity of relationships into derivative “interaction structures”. Isolating specific instances of relationships in this manner provides a platform to explore the nature of interpersonal exchange in detail.

Adopting scientific exploration as parody, me you me positions itself as an objective, rational investigation of intimate and complex personal emotions. As a commentary, this work suggests that the ability of intimacy, empathy and even love to be rationalised means that these values have lost their social relevance. me you me aims to create a platform for spectator reflection and dialogue on the importance of these values by ironically suggesting their finite, rational limitations.

____________________________________________________________________

Gallery 3 – For no real reason
Yasmin Smith

In July 2010, Yasmin Smith participated in an archaeological excavation in Spain, influencing her investigation into the intersections of fiction and fact in the representation of reality. For no real reason seeks to highlight this intersection, and the language structures, that underlie the interpretation of objects.

The House of the Tragic Poet is a 3D model of the floor plan of a Roman terrace, drawn and described by one of the volunteers on the dig. This work visually encapsulates the influence of memory and personal discourse on recounts of historical knowledge.

Broomsphere utilises 180 household brooms, which protrude from a core of welded plumbing sockets to create a 3 by 3 metre sphere of brooms. This work plays on language associations we create around unnerving objects. ‘Like a giant dandelion’, ‘sort of like a Sea Anemone but bigger’. This work was inspired by an investigation into literary tropes and the role they play in familiarising the unfamiliar.
____________________________________________________________________

Gallery 4 – Divine intervention
Kristin McIver

Kristin McIver is a visual artist whose work is a study of desire and aspiration. Through her works, the artist explores the aspirational impulses of the middle class, and highlights the way that fundamental human needs are transformed into desirable commodities by self serving global corporations.

Divine intervention proposes that the media and digital age have created a perpetual desiring machine, resulting in a global culture obsessed with material consumption. As Corporations expand their markets into remote corners of the globe, they exploit countries desperately trying to buy into the capitalist dream. Our natural habitats are destroyed in order to make way for newer, better environments; seemingly an improvement on that provided by nature.

Through its formal construction and materials, Divine intervention evokes the false propositions promised by futuristic developments, and their glossy promotional material. The work borrows a phrase taken directly from a marketing campaign, emblazoning it in neon to seduce the viewer, while exposing the irony and falsity of the message. The absurd proposal “Life unlimited” promises the impossible; the gift of immortality pursued previously only through religious and spiritual refuge. Has desire replaced religion to become the salvation of the 21st century?

Double Glazed
Curated by Angela Bennetts and Alice Fenton of Even Books – as part of the Firstdraft Emerging Curators Program supported by Arts NSW

DOUBLE GLAZED is a collection of doubles, one half text, one half image.

Artists: Kevin Tran, Karl Maier (Rinzen), Sui Zhen, Rachel Feery, Cybele Malinowski, Jacob Burge, Zoe McMahon and Bryn Desmond-Jones

Writers: Nadia Saccardo, Amanda Maxwell, Caleb Lewis, Alice Williams, Lee Tran Lam, Tessa Lunney, Tom Lee and Eddie Sharp

Despite what the name might suggest, this is not an exhibition about donuts. What it is, is a typically Even Books experiment in theming, collaboration and merging disciplines that includes works from many of Sydney’s most exciting visual artists and writers. Yes, you read that correctly – Eve Books has gotten writers involved and they’re blowing their work up big and bold and hanging it on the gallery wall next to ‘real’ art because, well, why not?

To break the concept down: Even Books asked a group of talented writers to write pieces related to the theme of TWINS/DOPPELGANGERS, and a group of artists to craft a visual response to the same theme. The curators then orchestrated a swap, and each creative then responded to someone else’s written or visual piece (writers to visual, artists to text), in a loop of stimulus/stimulated. These pieces will be exhibited in their pairs, creating a multi-disciplinary exhibition that toys with notions of ‘same’, ‘other’, ‘mine’ and ‘yours’.

On opening night, there will a one-off concept event similarly themed to TWINS/DOPPELGANGERS. This event will highlight key fictional or artistic examples of twins in an immersive, experiential fashion, as well as encouraging appreciation of the pieces. Attendees can expect: mirrors, dressed-up doubles, being tied to a stranger, screenings of films and more.

There will also be a limited edition publication available for purchase, designed by Blood & Thunder Publishing and with an opening essay by Dimitris Vardoulakis, author of The Doppelganger: Literature’s Philosophy.

The Firstdraft Emerging Curators Program is assisted by the NSW Government through Arts NSW, Communities NSW

WHO/WHAT IS EVEN BOOKS?

Even Books is a regular event themed around a book, author or genre. It is an attempt to create an experiential, lived and immersive interaction with words and the worlds they create. Even Books links artists, musicians, actors, writers with people who are seeking a connection with the creative communities in Sydney. People draw on walls, write love letters to strangers, re-enact scenes from literature, recreate Tarot cards in pop-up photo booths, resurrect Ern Malley’s cut+paste art criticism, play 6ft Guitar Hero, dress up, battle for best zombie dancer, play putt-putt golf beside Gatsby’s mansion, swig beer and meet people they don’t know.

There have been 12 events to date, including Sydney’s inaugural Readers’ Festival in May, a fringe event to the Writers’ Festival. Even Books is not-for-profit and itinerant, moving around independent venues like Fraser Studios, Bill+George and Performance Space.

Gallery 1 – The Learning Centre: Paintings for People
Kelly Doley

The Learning Centre: Paintings For People is an attempt to engage with others. To look at who and why people come into art galleries, what makes them stay, and the limits of what is (and what is not) sanctioned in ‘art spaces’.

In January of this year, people from Sydney donated their time and knowledge to Kelly Doley as part of a project called The Learning Centre. At Tin Sheds Gallery, Doley received 16 lessons ranging from Anarchism, Christianity, How to Break Up with Someone and How to Build a Bee Hotel. In exchange, and as a token of my appreciation, Doley offered to paint each participant a painting of his or her choice. These paintings are now complete and will be exhibited as Paintings For People. In addition, Doley has asked each Learning Centre participant to come into the gallery and collect his or her painting from the wall. Doley is hoping that the paintings will dissipate over the course of the exhibition, eventually leaving the gallery walls blank.

Doley will be present in the gallery during set collection times. Collection times are as follows: Saturday 23 October 12-6 pm; Saturday 30 October 12-6 pm; and Sunday 7 November 12-4 pm.

____________________________________________________________________
Gallery 2 – Lessons for Living: Know Your Resource No#1 (Wood)
James Harney

Lessons for Living: Know Your Resource No#1 (Wood) is an earnest attempt to re-claim and re-learn those skills that have been lost in contemporary culture. (Wood) is the first stage of this process whereby James Harney will attempt to make a chair out of the raw material of recycled Eucalyptus pilularis (Blackbutt) timber. The success and inevitable failure of this process over the course of Harney’s Firstdraft studio residency will form the basis for the exhibition.

____________________________________________________________________

Gallery 3 – Jewel of the Newell
Tulley Moore and Colleen Ahern

There are yowies on the Newell, truckies won’t stop there, out near Coonabarabran stories are told, plaster footprints have been taken.

The old 39 shield sign markers stretch the entire length of NSW from Toke in the south and Goondiwindi in the north, what lies between is the epitome of the j word thrown around in mind numbing, high rating TV reality fodder.

The Newell splits the land of the largest tribal area in NSW that of the Wiradjuri people. Bushrangers Kelly and Hall plied their trade, trees live on farms on the Newell and have their own displays, Crawf is proudly a favourite son of Finley (the self proclaimed Jewel of the Newell), Tidy Towns are aplenty. All have stories.

- Justin Dowd (Newell Highway Motorcycling specialist)

____________________________________________________________________

Gallery 4 – John Mandeville’s Flying Machine
Jesse Cox

We spend nearly one-third of our life sleeping and dreaming. In our minds we can travel to distant lands, speak with any real or imagined person and fulfill our wildest dreams. As children we invent fantastical worlds and creatures. As we grow older we escape into nostalgia and dream of better futures. But we never stop imagining.

Sir John Mandeville was the supposed author of a book of travels written in the fourteenth century. The book was highly unreliable (Mandeville himself may have never existed) and extremely fantastical, but became immensely popular. Writing from early explorers often included tales of creatures and lands that were so extraordinary that they sounded as if they belonged in mythology. Indeed, many myths began out of an initial encounter with a new creature that became completely distorted over the years. It is this blurry boundary between reality and fantasy that is the starting point for John Mandeville’s Flying Machine. Instead of a French explorer of the fourteenth century, the John Mandeville who is the protagonist of this exhibition is born within the timeframe of our own memories.

Gallery 1 and 2 – 42a
Alison Currie – director/choreographer/dancer; Annemarie Kohn – video artist; Alisdair Macindoe – sound artist; Kel Mocilnik – visual artist / dancer; Carlie Angel – dancer; Lewis Rankin – dancer

42a the dance of the home.

42a is dance, video, sound, media, sculpture and painting. It is an experience, an experience of home and homes and houses and our imaginations within those spaces. In a gallery setting you can come and go as you like, or stay for hours at a time.

42a is an interactive installation based dance work at the nexus of visual art, media and performance. The work utilises elements of dance, sculpture, video and new media to explore concepts relating to house and home. Themes include memories attached to objects, personal relationships within this space, instructions found in the home, how individuals relate to the physical constructs of a house, as well as notions of home, where that is, and the possibility of creating this space with in one’s imagination.

Workshops with the cast of 42a; come and learn the dance of the home. Try the movement, learn how the performance works and meet the artists Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th October 1pm – 3pm. Workshops by donation

____________________________________________________________________

Gallery 3 – A Solution
Jelena Telecki

A Solution is the project addressing the hesitancy and the confusion of living in-between two cultures. Being a migrant living and working in Australia, I have often perceived this confusion as an innate part of a migrant identity and aimed to further explore this issue in my paintings. In this sense, works from this series try to find the solution for the perplexity of being in a constant shift from a compliance to the immediate surrounding and the expectations to adapt to a positive and a happy environment, to a never fading sense of a failure, shame and a disappointment that is inseparable from the recent past of my country of origin and my personal history.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

____________________________________________________________________

Gallery 4 – Cream

Blaine Cooper and Lillian O’Neil

HASTA LA VISTA BABY. BLAM. BLAM.

Romance, love, hatred, death, life, cream, sexy. We like the movies.

Blaine Cooper and Lillian O’Neil present an epic drawing show of the stars. We want to spend some quality time with Arnie’s bad bad face and really get to know him and his famous friends. We want kissy kissy tension, on screen to off screen. Shatteringly fake drama exploding in gold. We have spent hours with them. A study of locked lips and tough love. Can this kind of romance and heroism become a reality? We are addicted to the romantically unachievable and the empty hero. We can’t get enough Blam Blam. We hope you enjoy CREAM, a celebration of trickery.

Gallery 1- In pursuit of a state of uncertainty
Barbara Knezevic

For this exhibition, Barbara Knezevic is presenting a series of sculptural studies. Posited as a means of working out, a probe with which to test the viability of ideas, these ‘studies’ encompass elements that veer from the handmade and unique to the mass produced and ubiquitous. Central to the artists’ interests is the consideration of how value and meaning is constructed through objects; simultaneously through their complex inter-relationships with each other, the viewer and the environment. Knezevic presents the viewer with a tableau, configured in a way that often produces a sense of unease. Thus the artist proposes objects as carriers of psychological meaning and points to the failures inherent in objecthood. Collectively, these works offer a consideration of transience; objects and meanings are presented as temporary, fragile, unstable, vulnerable and fundamentally contested.

Gallery 2 - Surrender Star
Kirra Jamison

As a painter Kirra Jamison’s practice can be broken down into two distinct modes of working. One part of her practice involves working loosely and almost entirely spontaneously on large scale canvas painting. These works are made when Jamison is warm. The second way of making work requires total control and planning and is the work seen in this exhibition. These works are made when Jamison is cold.

The kaleidoscopic Surrender Star paintings are part of an ongoing series of psychedelic gouache, pen and vinyl paintings on paper. Each work is comprised of intricate patterns that are repeated and inverted to create dense and graphic images. The execution of these paintings is physically restrained and intensely repetitive. For the artist, this meditative and time consuming process functions as a daily ritual. This compulsion to fill space and time with colour becomes a way of coping with the Melbourne winters.

Gallery 3 - Space Exploration
Giselle Stanborough

Space Exploration is a body of a work concerned with forging links between physical and cyber space, and utilizing the viewing experiences particular to each environment. The ongoing online elements of Space Exploration take place at: http://www.youtube.com/user/Spacepace9000. These video works are intended to be viewed outside the gallery via any web-enabled technology. The online component of the work reinterprets YouTube (and other sites associated with cloud computing) as a merger of reality television and science fiction. Whilst episodic and abstract, the online videos attempt to be part journey log and part diary room, evolving with and reflecting upon the evolution of the project. In conjunction with the videos Space Exploration involves a gallery installation depicting the crash landing of the virtual into the physical. The installation utilizes the corporality of the gallery space to form an experience analogous to the passing of information in cloud computing models. As the viewers transverses the space, their gaze is transferred back and fourth between different elements of the installation; the gaze becomes the data of the installation machine.

Gallery 4 - Superstructure
Jai McKenzie

Superstructure re-exhibits through its reductive form the visions of certain ideological mid-20th century architectural propositions. Buckminster Fuller and Superstudio proposed the unrealized construction of large circumscribing forms intended to encase or disrupt urban spaces to enable holistic systems for living, connection and growth. Superstructure is also only partially present. While its form signals ideas which are associated with these modernist notions, its dreamlike tension suggests a circumvention of the seriousness associated with such univocal social organization, challenging the optimistic concepts and convictions predicated on a technologically and morally superior future.
